Trump-Putin Summit To Focus On Syria

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu is in Moscow meeting with Vladimir Putin today, less than a week before the Russian presiden’t summit with United States President Donald Trump, in Helsinki.  The Israeli PM’s reason for continued, close communication with Russia is Iran’s growing presence in Syria; IRGC troops, Hezbollah and other Shi’ite militias under Iranian command and the construction of military/terrorist infrastructure.  Even though Iran and Russia have been aligned in preserving the reign of the mass murdering Syrian dictator, Bashar al-Assad, the Russian army operating in Syria has turned a blind eye to Israeli attacks on Iranian and Hezbollah assets within the country.

Israel has declared that it will not allow any Iranian presence in Syria, Russia recently stated that it is “absolutely unrealistic” to expect Iran NOT to have a presence there.  The Israeli Defense Forces have backed the words of its government, and has thus far prevented Iran from achieving the land bridge to Beirut it desperately desires.  After withdrawing from the disastrous JCPOA and imposing new sanctions on Iran, allowing it to set up military infrastructure within missile range of the US’s greatest ally in the region, Israel, is highly unlikely.  President Trump might make one of his “deals” with his Russian counterpart, which could entail Russia squeezing Iran out of Syria, in exchange for a greater share of lucrative Syrian reconstruction projects and regional influence.
