Iran Threatens To Force U.S. To Leave Syria
Ali Akbar Velayati has an international arrest warrant issued against him for his involvement in the 1994 bombing of an Argentine Jewish Center, that killed 85 people; he currently serves as a top advisor to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In response to Israel’s demands of no permanent Iranian presence in Syria, Velayati stated that the only way Iran would leave Syria would be at the behest of the Assad regime, and would not leave due to Israeli or U.S. pressure. The terrorist/advisor went well beyond simply refusing to withdraw Iranian military from the war-torn country, he threatened: “We will counter the Americans powerfully. We will help Syria counter the US aggression. If the US does not want to leave our region, we will force it to do that.”
For years Iran has aided the Taliban in Afghanistan, and Shi’ite militias in Iraq, to fight, maim and kill American troops; this is the same regime that ordered the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut that killed 241 U.S. service personnel. This Iranian threat poses credible security concerns, not just for U.S. forces engaged in the Syrian theater, but anywhere Hezbollah’s terror tentacles reach.
