Syrian Troops Illegally Occupy Abandoned UN Post

Share

After the Yom Kippur War of 1973, the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) was created to ensure Israel and Syria abide by the terms of their ceasefire, which included the creation of a “no-man’s land” to serve as a buffer zone between to the countries.  At the height of the Syrian civil war, in 2014 47 UN peacekeepers were kidnapped by al-Qaeda linked rebels, before being released two weeks later; as a result, UNDOF pulled many of its troops out of Syria, abandoning a base in the process.  As Bashar al-Assad looks to defeat the remaining pockets of rebel fighters in Southern Syria, he is not only violating a 44 year old agreement, but is using the very same UN assets meant to prevent such violations, to commit them!  What is the UN reaction going to be?

One need look only 20 miles away, where the UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) are supposed to be responsible for preventing the arming of militias in Southern Lebanon, but where Hezbollah has thousands of fighters and over 100,000 rockets pointed at Israel.  UNIFIL has not only allowed the massive build-up to happen under their noses, but there have been numerous reports of their complicity in it.  Syrian army and Iranian backed Shi’ite militias will soon be slaughtering civilians a few kilometers from the Israeli border, under the watchful binoculars of UNDOF, from the safety of Israel.

When Israel is forced to take military action because of the UN’s failures, it will no doubt be targeted for countless condemnations and resolutions in the General Assembly, Security Council and the Human Rights Council.  The Useless Nations time has passed.
