Iran Rejects Pompeo’s Policy, Says Prepared For War
The US demands laid out in Mike Pompeo’s Iran policy speech were robustly rejected by Tehran, with military and political leaders hurling insults at, and making threats to the Secretary of State. Despite Pompeo never mentioning US military action against the Islamic Republic, the Iranian Army’s Chief of Staff proclaimed Iran “more prepared than ever” for a confrontation with the US. Another military commander warned “the people of Iran should stand united … to deliver a strong punch to the mouth of the American Secretary of State.” Shouldn’t France, Germany and the UK question why Iran would prefer to enter a war it can’t win, than allow inspections of its suspected nuclear sites? Europe can join the US and apply enough financial pressure to force Iran to choose between negotiating a more comprehensive nuclear deal, or complete economic collapse and probable regime change. Or, they can choose to sidestep US sanctions for short term profits, and continue propping up the repressive regime, prolonging the suffering of the people of Iran.
