Really Dumb Things They Said
Be Conscious When Talking about People Crossing the Border

Hello, and welcome to American Truth Projects, Really Dumb Things They Said. I’m Barry Nussbaum.
Congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio Cortez, you know, AOC, has a message for Americans worried about the border crisis on the U.S. Mexican border.
During an Instagram Livestream, Ocasio Cortez told her viewers that they should be conscious of the language when describing the flow of people attempting to cross the southern border. ‘They want to say, but what about the surge? Well, first of all, just gut check, stop. Anyone who’s using the term surge around you is constantly trying to invoke a militaristic frame,’ she said.
She explained that those voicing concerns about uncontrolled illegal entry into the United States are likely speaking from a racist perspective because the migrants included unaccompanied minors. It’s unfair to view the rise in entry attempts as a cause for concern.
She said, ‘This is not a surge. These are children, and they are not insurgents, and we are not being invaded, which, by the way, is a white supremacist idea and philosophy. The idea that if another is coming in the population, this is like an invasion of who we are.’
So, when you comment about the surge of the people at the border, which, by the way, I looked it up, the Oxford Dictionary defines surge as a sudden large increase. That’s what the word means. You and the dictionary are racists. Don’t use the word surge because you’re a racist, according to AOC. Just forget the Oxford Dictionary. You got it. AOC equals dumb.
